I'm calling this dubious because of White's poor record after reaching this position, winning only one game, while losing seven, and drawing 4. So much for the strength of such a bind (this is reminding me of the Zimmerman-Andries game this week. Andries played his bishop to d6 and Zimmerman declined the win of a tempo with a pawn push in a similar structure (Bg2 fianchetto instead of e3). True, the Rb8 does not have the sort of menacing penatration that his other rook and queen used to have, but at least he controls the open file, even if for now there is little prospect of entry. In order to contain the power of the rook entry threats, white's pieces seem a bit tied down. I refuse to believe that white has serious threats on the kinside. I never liked the move of the king to e7 in the first place, perhaps at that juncture black could have played ..Bc7 to trade off a checking Ne5. Black needs to get his pieces active in conjunction with his posesstion of the b-file and laugh at white's meaningless kingside. The King can stand as sentry of g6 here, on e7 and responding to Nh4 with Kf7 so that Nxg6? would be answered with KxN. 39.Nh4 Kf7 ( 39...Na6 40.Nxg6+ ( 40.Nc3 Ba5 41.Rb1 Rxb1 42.Nxb1 Kf7 ( 42...Nc7?? 43.Nxg6+) ) ) ] 37.h5 g6? [ I don't see why black should allow an open file on the kingside in this way. His king has moved from there, making that area slighty weaker for him. Currently, he should be happy to trade off his bishop in the permantly closed position for white's potentially wonderful steed that may jump Ne5. I don't know if black can suceed in getting his knight to the tasty squares on g4, e4, c4, and the less tasty b5, but he should certainly try. The game continuation wastes time and gives white a free hand. 37...Bc7 38.Rc2] 38.hxg6 hxg6 Diagram

the h-file, h7, and g6 are like a gaping wound in black's position.39.Rc2 Kf7 black has to waste two moves putting a band-aid on his gaping wound. Now his king has no possibility to back up his forces on the queenside. 40.Rb2 Rxb2+ Diagram

it's not incorrect for white to trade rooks despite what I said about the h-file. It might have been possible to try to fight for the files, in theory white could have owned one of the two, but it was too difficult and slow for white to try to get his rook untied from his obstructing pieces on his first and second ranks. g6 and c6 remain as gaping wounds that can be attacked from e5 and h4 by two knights. Without rooks, a Nh4 may stand unmolested tying up black's king. If black protects with ..Nf8, then the other knight can maneuver to e5. It looks like black will be stuck in passivity while white's king can advance. At the same time, though, black's bishop controls a lot of king attack squares, and if white's king walks Kd3-c2-b3, then somebody better be watching for ..Bd2 with an attack on white's major pawn chain. The game is not yet in white's hands, but I wouldn't mind being him figuring out how to solve the problem of winning. Maybe he should return that Nd1 to where it is after taking the rook, then walk his king to a4, where the Ba5 will have no recourse than to retreat. Then, he can begin the plan of attacking black's weak points with Nh4 and Nf2-d3-e5. At that point, black will probably be induced to play BxN and white will win the a pawn.41.Nxb2 Ke7 42.Nd3?! He's totally toast.] 42...Bc7 instead, white goes for a quicker plan. He induces the retreat of the bishop as two knights jumping to e5 will indeed win one of the two weak points I mentioned. Now the white king's path to black's queenside is temporarily paved with a pretty darksquared walkway, but alas, apparently that walkway leads to a dead end. 43.Kd2 [ 43.Nb4 Nb8 44.Ne5 Bxe5 45.fxe5 ( 45.dxe5 a5 46.Nd3 ( 46.Nc2 Na6 47.a3 Nxc5) ) ; 43.a4 a5 44.Nfe5 Nxe5 45.fxe5 Kd7 46.Nf4 Bd8 47.Nxg6 Bxg5 48.Kf3] 43...Kf7 44.Kc2 Ke7 Due to black's mistaken play on the kingside, his king is incarcerated by his own wretched malcontent subjects. Black's cowering steed kneels humbly in the back of the stable. Black's triple pawn base at c6, e6, and g6 can no longer be defended. Had avoided allowing white to trade a set of pawns with 36.g6? the best white could have hoped for here would have been to sac his knight for the g6 pawn and get a protected passed pawn on h3. True, from right here I guess white would still win, but certainly unencumbered by a constant defense of g6 black could have organized himself in such a way so as to get to the h-file in time. 47.Nh4 Ke7 48.Nxg6+ Kf7 49.Nh4 [ 49.Ne5+ Is reported as better by Fritz. 49...Bxe5 ( 49...Kg7 50.Nexc6) 50.fxe5 ( 50.dxe5 Kg6) 50...Kg6 51.Nd3 Kf7 ( 51...Kxg5 52.Nf4 Kh6 53.Nxe6) 52.Nf4 I dunnno.] 49...Bd8 50.Kc2 [ Fritz likes 50.Nf3 Bc7 51.Ne5+ Bxe5 52.fxe5 Kg6 53.Nd3 Nd7 54.Nf4+ Kxg5 55.Nxe6+ Maybe it's faster.
