SODIUM PUMP ACTIVE SITE THE ALPHA SUBUNIT

Hey Kurt! Ya got something you want me to put here?

The alpha subunit of the Na-K ATPase. Here the translocation
of Na and K ions is thought to happen. I have shown the
stoichiometry in the cartoon by indication two 'K's entering
the NPE cell at the end of the arrow, with three 'Na's leaving
the NPE cell and entering the ocular posterior chamber.
The mucosal disposition of the membrane protein is thought
by many to be very important to provide an efficient net
movement of Na ions from the interstitium to the posterior
chamber, although there are studies that seem to provide
histological evidence of partial serosal localization.
Aberrant localization of the ATPase is indicated in
Polycistic kidney disease.
